As human beings, we are multifaceted. According to Michael Hyatt’s Life Score Assessment, our various life domains can be summarized in 3 categories:
- BEING: Spiritual, Intellectual, Emotional, Physical
- RELATING: Marital, Parental, Social
- DOING: Vocational, Avocational, Financial
For me, translation falls into several of those domains. It’s spiritual because I see it as a way to fulfill the Great Commission, to spread the Gospel. It’s intellectual because it requires intense concentration and creativity. Translation is vocational and also financial, because sometimes I earn money from it. And it’s avocational, because I often do volunteer translation to help nonprofits.
What life domains does translation fit into for you? I wanted to explore life domains before talking about the idea of today’s post: your most important word for 2023.
A few years ago, the idea of choosing a “word for the year” became popular. I got on board in 2019 with the word “Prioritize”. I wanted to choose a word that I could focus on in every domain of my life, and that was what I needed that year. Then I had “Balance” in 2020 when my schedule was too stressful and I needed to pull back somewhat. In 2021, I chose “Stronger”, and in 2022 my word was “Deeper”.
For 2023, my word of the year is “Reset”. The past year ended up being kind of difficult with repercussions from the pandemic, and some health and energy challenges. I am ready for a RESET in every domain of my life.
As far as translation goes, my plans for Reset involve:
- Doing a translation blog/newsletter/YouTube clip faithfully every week; and
- Refocusing on the original audience I had in mind when I began my translation endeavours (religious nonprofits).
If you are involved in translation outside of a religious nonprofit, you are more than welcome to stay connected. You will learn valuable translation strategies and tips that you can apply in your work. But I just want to be transparent and let you know that the information I provide from now on will be more oriented to religious translation, for authors, ministries and missionaries.
